ON-LINE SAFETY TRAINING OPPORTUNITY
LETTER FROM CINDY BLOCH, NYS DCJS

As a member of the Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Task Force, the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services, Missing and Exploited Children Clearinghouse (MECC) has announced they are offering innovative training programs for school age children, their parents and school staff on maintaining “online safety.”

Staff from MECC may provide direct training if your staff is not sufficiently able to provide the training, or they may assist your officers with materials including three multi-media (PowerPoint) presentations for students, parents and educators that have recently been updated and include the following topics:

Online Safety Rules        Cyberbullying        Sexting/Sextortion        Social Networking (Facebook, MySpace)

Risky Behavior and Consequences        Disclosure of Personal Information        Privacy Settings        Online Enticement

Alternatives to Running Away

The student presentation is 40 minutes in length and is appropriate for grades 6 – 12.  The parent and educator presentations are approximately 50 minutes.

Officers have the option of receiving presentations (including a presenter’s guide) on CD or scheduling a MECC staff member to conduct presentations.  Train-the-trainer programs are also available.

Additional information, including viewable versions of the student and parent programs are located on the DCJS website - www.criminaljustice.state.ny.us
